In accordance with section 116 of the National Electricity Law AEMO has issued a direction to a participant in the South Australia region.
The direction was necessary to maintain the power system in a secure operating state.
The direction was issued at 1800 hrs 29/01/2018, with effect from 2130 hrs 29/01/2018. The direction is expected to stay in place until 0800 hrs 01/02/2018.
For the purposes of the National Electricity Rules this is a direction under clause 4.8.9(a).

Possible intervention to manage power system security in South Australia (SA) Region
The synchronous generating units expected to be synchronised in SA from 2130 29/01/2018 to 0400 hrs 31/02/2018 in Pre-dispatch published at 1700 hrs 29/01/2018 are sufficient to maintain system strength in SA however following a credible contingency event AEMO will not be able to return SA to a secure operating state within 30 minutes.

AEMO currently estimates that, in the absence of sufficient market response by 1800 hrs 29/01/2018. AEMO may need to issue a Direction requiring one or more SA synchronous generating unit(s) to operate or remain synchronised from 2130 hrs 29/01/2018 to 0800 hrs 01/02/2018, to maintain power system security and sufficient system strength in SA.
