Connecting and Registering Generators in the National Electricity Market: An Overview

This course is designed to support individuals and organisations involved in connecting and registering generators and integrated resource systems in the National Electricity Market (NEM).

Delivered as a half-day course by AEMO subject matter experts, the program provides a practical, end-to-end overview of the connections and registration process. It equips participants with the knowledge, context, and tools needed to navigate complex technical and regulatory environments.

What the course will cover:

• Connection stages – how projects progress from pre-feasibility to operational, including optional stages and support pathways such as pre-application and the early assessment framework
• Registration – the requirements, participant classifications and processes to achieve registration and enable market participation in the NEM
• Roles and responsibilities – understanding how AEMO, Network Service Providers (NSPs), and Connection Applicants interact across each stage
• Technical and regulatory considerations – including performance standards, modelling requirements, and regulatory frameworks that underpin connections
• Alterations and modifications – how to navigate changes to existing generating and integrated resource systems and utilise process guidelines and supporting scenario factsheets
• Connections evolution and reforms – insights into how the process has evolved over time and the key initiatives being implemented to improve efficiency and reduce complexity

The course also highlights current industry challenges and trends (such as connection timelines and volumes), helping participants understand the broader system context and outlook for the energy transition.

Sessions are led by AEMO's Onboarding and Connections team and offer insightful tips and information to help participants to navigate the connections and registrations processes.
