Frequently asked questions

  • Why have the BPQD delivery timelines changed?

Following a go-live readiness assessment, AEMO identified that additional time is required to ensure a stable and reliable production environment at scale.

The decision to revise the delivery approach reflects:

    • Remaining technical and deployment activities
    • Longer than expected industry testing and connectivity timelines
    • The need to reduce implementation risk for both AEMO and participants.

The scope of BPQD remains unchanged. All planned functionalities will be delivered with the go-live now scheduled later to support a more controlled and reliable implementation.

  • What are the updated BPQD implementation timeframes?

Following the readiness assessment, AEMO has revised the indicative BPQD go-live date to 19 August 2026.

This date is subject to the completion of final production readiness and validation activities.

AEMO will confirm the final go-live date during the 2 July Program Consultative Forum (PCF). Participants should continue readiness and testing activities in the lead-up to confirmation of the final implementation timeline.

  • Has the overall intent of BPQD changed?

No, the overall intent of BPQD has not changed. BPQD remains an important reform to:

    • Improve visibility of power quality across the NEM
    • Support DNSPs and other participants with better data
    • Meet regulatory requirements under the rule.

The end-state capability and policy intent remains unchanged.

  • What does this change mean for participants right now?

    Participant should:

    • Continue progressing readiness activities where possible
    • Continue testing and engaging with AEMO
    • Monitor further updates and guidance on revised timing and approach.

AEMO will continue to support participants through:

    • Industry forums
    • Testing support
    • Direct 1:1 engagement where necessary
    • Regular updates from the NEM Reform mailbox
  • What are the participant compliance obligations following this delay?

AEMO acknowledges that participants will be seeking clarity on compliance obligations. AEMO is engaging with the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) regarding BPQD implementation timing and associated obligations. Participants are encouraged to meet with the AER regarding their compliance obligations.

  • Should participants continue their readiness and testing activities?

    Yes, participants are encouraged to:

    • Continue testing activities where feasible
    • Progress development and integration work
    • Maintain engagement with AEMO through forums and support channels.

Readiness activities already underway remain valuable and will support successful implementation.

  • Will BPQD still be delivered via the IDX platform?

Yes, BPQD will continue to be delivered via the Industry Data Exchange (IDX) platform which supports API based submission of data and file-based integration via AEMO Gateway Software.

No change to the overall delivery mechanism is proposed.

  • What happens to prior participant investment in readiness?

AEMO recognises that participants have invested significant time and resources in preparing for BPQD.

That investment remains important and will support future implementation. Existing builds, testing and integration work are expected to remain largely applicable.

Further guidance will be provided where any adjustments are required.

  • When will AEMO provide further clarity on the revised approach?

    AEMO will provide updates through:

    • NEM Reform communications
    • Industry forums (e.g. PCF, Implementation Forum)
    • Targeted 1:1 engagement where required.

    Updates will include:

    • Revised delivery approach and timing
    • Scope of initial and subsequent phases
    • Participant expectations and next steps
  • Will there be changes to testing or support arrangements?

    AEMO will continue to provide:

    • Industry testing support
    • Defect resolution
    • Regular engagement sessions (e.g. Q&A, forums).

Testing timelines and support arrangements may be adjusted in line with the revised delivery approach.

  • Who can I contact for further information?

Participants are encouraged to contact the NEM Reform team at [email protected] for any further information.
