Powerlink has published a Project Specification Consultation Report (PSCR) to maintain reliability of supply and address condition risks at Townsville South and Townsville East.

Townsville South Substation provides an injection point into the Ergon Energy distribution network to supply power to southern and eastern Townsville, and is also a transfer point for enabling the flow of electricity between Clare to the south and Townsville to the north. Townsville East Substation was established in 2008 to supply Townsville central business district and port.

The secondary systems at these substations have been identified as being in poor condition or at the end of their technical service lives with identified obsolescence issues and condition risks.

Powerlink must therefore take action to avoid the increasing likelihood of loss of power arising from failure of the aging secondary systems equipment at Townsville South and Townsville East Substations.

The PSCR outlines Powerlink’s proposal to replace the secondary systems in the existing control buildings at each substation by June 2028, with indicative capital costs of $23.35 million in 2025/26 prices.

In accordance with the requirements of the NER, a summary of the PSCR is made available on the AEMO website. A copy of the PSCR can be obtained from the Powerlink website or by emailing [email protected].

Submissions on the PSCR are required by the closing date of Thursday, 22 October 2026.
