Update - Severe Space Weather warning for short duration GIC 05/11/2023

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology's Space Weather Forecasting Centre has issued the following warning.

Severe space weather warning: Severe Space Weather warning for short duration GIC.

A Coronal Mass Ejection has been observed in the solar wind and will impact Earth.

Short duration GIC activity is expected within the next 20-60 minutes.

Increased awareness of critical infrastructure is advised.

If required; actions will be taken as per AEMO's system operating procedure SO_OP3715 Power System Security Guidelines.

Additional system normal contingency risks, including trip of APD load, potential operation of the GFT and TTS control schemes, and trip of Basslink will be included when determining FCAS requirements from 6th November. These constraint equations have been added to the constraint set F-I_FFR_GLOBAL_2 which is now invoked from 1300hrs on 6th November.

Fast Frequency Response Market - Increase in R1 volume 6 November 2023

AEMO ELECTRICITY MARKET NOTICE

Following review of the operation of the Very Fast FCAS market, AEMO will increase the cap on dispatch of Very Fast Raise (R1) Contingency FCAS from 50 MW to 100 MW on Monday 6th November from 1300 hrs AEST.

The cap on Very Fast Lower (L1) Contingency FCAS will remain unchanged at 50 MW.

A range of additional system-normal contingency risks will also be considered considered when determining Very Fast FCAS requirements from this time.

There is an opportunity for testing QNI Minor for flows from NSW to Qld up to 750 MW on Tuesday 31st October from 1200 to 1700hrs.

This test includes a trip and reclose of a line in northern NSW.

Vulnerable lines in TAS region.

Refer to AEMO Electricity Market Notice 110350.

At 2029 hrs 21/10/2023 the Waddamana - Tungatinah No.1 and No.2 110kV lines tripped and auto reclosed.

The cause of trip was identified as due to lightning.

In accordance with SO_OP_3715, AEMO now considers the Waddamana - Tungatinah No.1 and No.2 110kV lines to be vulnerable with a category of probable due to lightning.

AEMO's weather service provider has issued forecast temperatures equal to or greater than the NEM Local Temperature Alert Levels for listed weather stations below.

QLD
Dalby Ap (37+ Deg C): 31st Oct

The NEM Local Temperature Alert Levels are:

Launceston Ti Tree Bend: 33 Deg C, Dalby Airport: 37 Deg C, for all other selected weather stations: 39 Deg C.

AEMO requests Market Participants to:

1. review the weather forecast in the local area where their generating units / MNSP converter stations are located and,

2. if required, update the available capacity in their dispatch offers or availability submissions consistent with the forecast temperatures.
