Possible intervention to manage power system security In South Australia (SA) Region
Possible intervention to manage power system security In South Australia (SA) Region
The synchronous generating units expected to be synchronised in SA from 2230 hrs 27/03/2018 to 0600 hrs 28/03/2018 in Pre-dispatch published at 1230 hrs 27/03/2018 are inadequate to maintain sufficient fault levels in SA and hence a secure operating state.
AEMO currently estimates that, in the absence of sufficient market response by 2100 hrs 27/03/2018, AEMO may need to issue a Direction requiring one or more SA synchronous generating unit(s) to operate or remain synchronised from 2230 hrs 27/03/2018 to 0600 hrs 28/03/2018 to maintain sufficient fault levels in SA.

AEMO currently estimates that, in the absence of sufficient market response by 1350 hrs 24/03/18, AEMO may need to issue a Direction requiring one or more SA synchronous generating unit(s) to return to service or remain synchronised from 2030 hrs 24/03/18 to 0700 hrs 26/03/18, to maintain sufficient system strength in SA.

Possible intervention to manage power system security In South Australia (SA) Region
The synchronous generating units expected to be synchronised in SA from 2100 hrs 20/03/18 to 0600 hrs 21/03/18 in Pre-dispatch published at 1430 hrs 20/03/18 are sufficient to maintain system strength in SA however following a credible contingency event AEMO will not be able to return SA to a secure operating state within 30 minutes.

Planned outage at South East substation in SA region on 22/03/2018 requiring a reclassification
The South East 275 kV No.1 SVC in South Australia (SA) region is planned to be out of service from 1300 hrs on 22/03/2018 to 1330 hrs on 22/03/2018.
During this outage, the trip of the South East - Tailem Bend No.1 and No.2 275 kV lines will be reclassified as a credible contingency due to temporary protection arrangements required during this outage. SA will remain connected to the rest of the NEM via the 275kV and the 132kV network.
A credible contingency of loss of both South East - Tailem Bend 275 kV lines during this planned outage will sever the 275kV connections between the NEM and SA. If SA remains connected to the NEM via the 132kV network, this will pose a system security issue.
If the above credible contingency occurs, 35 MW of raise and lower regulation FCAS will be sourced from within SA.
In addition, AEMO will take all necessary steps as outlined in Section 6.1 of SO_OP_3715 Power System Security Guideline to separate the 132kV network and therefore manage an orderly separation of SA from the NEM.

Update - Non-credible contingency event - NSW region - 15/02/18
Refer market notice 61290
At 1339 hrs the Broken Hill 220 kV bus tripped which also disconnected the Broken Hill - Buronga X2 220 kV Line and the Broken Hill - Silverton X6 220 kV Line.
The cause of this non credible contingency event is known and AEMO is satisfied that another occurrence of this event is unlikely under the current circumstances.
