WEM Reform Implementation Update

The Western Australian State Government has confirmed the commencement date for the new WEM will be 1 October 2023.  

The Western Australian State Government has confirmed the commencement date for the new Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) will be 1 October 2023.  As a result, AEMO has released a new implementation plan and timeline for the delivery of major reforms under the WEM Reform Program.

The new timeline was developed following the gazettal of the core reformed WEM rules, which have set the foundation for AEMO’s scope of work - the WEM Reform procedure and IT system development, consultation, and implementation.  

The new timeline will appropriately manage risks by providing two years to develop and consult on 50 new or updated WEM Procedures and build or update 37 systems, then conduct a robust Market Trial.
