Registration is required for anyone who wishes to participate in the gas retail markets in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria or Western Australia.
While formal roles – and registerable capacities – vary from state to state, anyone that functions as distributors, retailers and self-contracting users must register in the applicable retail gas market. Other specified roles – such as transmission service providers – may also need to register in some states.
Depending on their role and location, gas retail market participants may also have to register in other markets, including the Declared Wholesale Gas Market (DWGM) and the Short Term Trading Market (STTM).
Part 15A of the National Gas Rules (NGR) contains the registration and eligibility criteria that new applicants should familiarise themselves with before applying to register. The information contained here is for guidance only and is no substitute for reading and understanding the NGR and applicable retail gas market procedures.
