Possible intervention to manage power system security in South Australia (SA) Region

AEMO ELECTRICITY MARKET NOTICE

Possible intervention to manage power system security in South Australia (SA) Region

The combination of synchronous generating units currently expected to be synchronised in SA from 0030 hrs 18/07/2021 in Pre-dispatch will not provide sufficient system strength in SA to maintain the power system in a secure operating state.
In the absence of sufficient market response AEMO may need to intervene by issuing a direction requiring one or more SA synchronous generating unit(s) to operate or remain synchronised from 0030 hrs 18/07/2021 to maintain power system security in SA. Refer to current Transfer Limit Advice for SA system strength on the AEMO website.
If necessary, AEMO will estimate and publish the latest time at which AEMO would need to intervene after the 1230 hrs Pre-dispatch run on the 17/07/2021.

Daily planned outage of Heywood No.1 500kV Busbar and Heywood-Tarrone 500kV line in Victoria region on 28,29,30,31 July 2021

AEMO ELECTRICITY MARKET NOTICE

The Heywood No.1 500 kV busbar and Heywood-Tarrone 500kV line in Victoria Region was planned out of serviice on the following periods:

-0500hrs to 1700hrs on 28/07/2021
-0500hrs to 1700hrs on 29/07/2021
-0500hrs to 1700hrs on 30/07/2021
-0500hrs to 1700hrs on 31/07/2021

A credible contingency event during this planned outage could cause synchronous separation of the South Australia (SA) region from the rest of the NEM. If separation occurs, load may be interrupted due to the operation of the Automatic Under Frequency Load Shedding (AUFLS) scheme in SA.

The credible separation contingency is managed as follows:

When power transfer is from SA to Victoria (Vic), contingency lower FCAS will be sourced from SA.
When power transfer is from Vic to SA, due to the 47-52Hz island separation frequency band advised by the SA jurisdiction, contingency raise FCAS is not sourced in SA and the AUFLS scheme may respond to low frequency events.
Power transfer will be restricted on Victoria - South Australia interconnector (Heywood interconnector).

Forecast capacity reserves in the SA region are currently sufficient to meet electricity demand during the planned outage.

The following constraint sets have been invoked for this outage:

-V-HYTR
-F-I-HYSE
-S-X_BC_CP
-V-HYTX_M12
-V-HY_500BUS
-I-VS_050

Refer AEMO Network Outage Schedule (NOS) for further details.
