Coal seam gas (CSG) sector consumption
- The CSG consumption forecast for Queensland covers electricity consumed at coal fields, mainly for gas processing and compression, as well as pumping of groundwater. The produced CSG can be used to meet LNG export demand or domestic gas demand.
- In the short term, the continued ramp-up of Queensland CSG production projects is projected to continue being the largest single growth sector for electricity usage in the NEM.
- In the longer term, forecast consumption growth is driven by projected increased electricity use per CSG well, as more marginal fields are developed.
- The consumption trajectory for CSG operations is similar to that in the 2016 National Electricity Forecasting Report (NEFR) , although short-term forecasts are lower (forecast consumption of 6,393 GWh in 2017–18, against 6,720 GWh forecast for that year in the 2016 NEFR), to reflect updated production data provided to AEMO.
