On 12 May 2009 NEMMCO discontinued its earlier practice of calculating and publishing a Greenhouse Intensity Index for NEM. Calculation of the NEM Greenhouse Intensity Index requires accurate input data representing the greenhouse intensity of individual generating plants. NEMMCO did not have an accurate source for the data, and was therefore concerned that the index may not be accurate.
AEMO recognises that some industry participants are seeking for an index of this type to continue to support some developing processes. To that end, AEMO is working with a number of parties including AFMA, the NGF and the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change (DCC) with the aim of facilitating a suitable replacement.
