On 12 May 2009 NEMMCO discontinued its earlier practice of calculating and publishing a Greenhouse Intensity Index for NEM. Calculation of the NEM Greenhouse Intensity Index requires accurate input data representing the greenhouse intensity of individual generating plants. NEMMCO did not have an accurate source for the data, and was therefore concerned that the index may not be accurate.
Subsequently, the AEMC has made a Rule change for AEMO to develop procedures to publish a Carbon Dioxide Equivalent Intensity Index. This procedure has now been published, effective 1 July 2011 (or earlier if AEMO publishes the intensity index earlier)
AEMO is currently developing software to enable the publication of the Carbon Dioxide Equivalent Intensity Index, which will be implemented prior to 1 July 2011.
