AEMO ensures that all relevant stakeholders gain a fair and full opportunity to participate in the ongoing operation, development and planning of Australian energy markets. AEMO strives to serve as a constructive facilitator bringing stakeholders together so that all view-points are considered in the effort to agree on the right way forward.
AEMO fulfils this role through free provision and dissemination of information and market data to market stakeholders and through facilitation of processes, programs, committees and other representative forums where stakeholders provide feedback and collectively address energy market issues and opportunities.
Industry consultations are used as the main way to gain stakeholder feedback about emerging issues and about AEMO’s operational performance. This consultation process is vital to the maintenance of effective day to day operations, to the development and refinement of effective new market mechanisms, and to the integrity of long-term planning.
A survey of AEMO stakeholders was conducted between November and December 2009. The survey aimed to inform the development of AEMO’s strategic plan and enable a range of performance benchmarks to be established.
AEMO has established a number of working groups to consult with stakeholders and interested parties. The purpose of the working groups is to provide an additional communication forum to assist in resolving issues as they arise and to contribute to the energy market's ongoing improvement. Some working groups are convened for special purposes or projects, others are ongoing. The list of working groups is not an exhaustive list of industry groups, but indicates those groups that AEMO chairs, convenes or provides secretariat support to.

The EMIT Steering Committee came into existence in mid 2007, following industry support for the need for a body to guide IT directions and investments across the energy markets of Australia. With the proposed establishment of the Australian Energy Market Operator, which is to subsume the functions of a number of existing electricity and gas market operators, the Steering Committee now has a broader national energy market focus, encompassing the electricity and gas markets in Australia.
The major initial focus of the Steering Committee has been to establish an EMIT Strategy which outlines a 10 year vision and 5 year rolling plan for IT systems supporting the Australian energy markets, except for the energy markets in WA and the NT. The EMIT Strategy is intended to cover IT systems and services associated with the operation and support of wholesale and retail markets in the electricity and gas industries.
At our members briefing of 21 May 2010, we released a draft Energy Sector Engagement Strategy. The strategy presents our approach to stakeholder engagement, which forms an important part of AEMO’s Strategic Plan and is linked directly to our Vision, Mission, and Values. This strategy sets out our approach to more effectively engaging with all energy sector stakeholders.
The main initiatives of the strategy include establishing the principles by which we will engage with you—which are embodied in a public charter—and extending the programmed contact with three new executive-level forums.
We are now looking for your feedback on the strategy, and we would be pleased to meet with you to discuss any aspect of the draft.
