Energy Market Information Technology Strategic Plan

This notice informs all interested parties that the Energy Market Information Technology (EMIT) Steering Committee is conducting a consultation on an Energy Market Information Technology (EMIT) Strategy.

This consultation is not required by any laws or rules in any energy market, but the framework of this consultation is similar to those conducted under those laws and rules.

Date of notice

This Notice of First Stage of EMIT Strategy Consultation was issued on 21 April 2009.

Objectives of the consultation

The objectives of the consultation are to provide interested parties with the opportunity to be involved in the development of the EMIT Strategy.

Background
  • The EMIT Steering Committee came into existence in mid 2007, following industry support for the need for a body to guide IT directions and investments across the energy markets of Australia.  With the proposed establishment of the Australian Energy Market Operator, which is to subsume the functions of a number of existing electricity and gas market operators, the Steering Committee now has a broader national energy market focus, encompassing the electricity and gas markets in Australia.
  • The major initial focus of the Steering Committee has been to establish an EMIT Strategy which outlines a 10 year vision and 5 year rolling plan for IT systems supporting the Australian energy markets, except  for the energy markets in WA and the NT. The EMIT Strategy is intended to cover IT systems and services associated with the operation and support of wholesale and retail markets in the electricity and gas industries.
  • This consultation aims to broaden awareness of the EMIT Strategy and to provide a mechanism for interested parties to contribute to the development of the EMIT strategy.

Note that, in considering any submissions received during this consultation, the Steering Committee will consult with energy industry bodies, such as the Energy Retailers’ Association of Australia, National Generators’ Forum, Energy Networks Association, NEMMCO and VENCorp.

Matter under consultation

The matter under consultation is identified as the Energy Market Information Technology Strategy.

The consultation process

As referred to earlier, this consultation is not required by any laws or rules governing any energy market.  Hence, the process has been designed to ensure interested parties have an opportunity to contribute to the development of the EMIT Strategy.
