Eager and EMPOWERED, 11 new graduates launched their energy careers with AEMO in February 2015.AEMO’s class of 2014 will gain experience in a range of business areas across AEMO, including comprehensive training in gas and electricity operations, energy markets and information technology; and will benefit from working on real projects with real responsibility with some of the best energy-focused minds in Australia.
Read below to gain further insight into their EMPOWERING stories.
As a graduate in AEMO’s Gas Operations Planning team, Jessie’s chemical engineering studies come in handy!
Jessie is required to understand fluid dynamic concepts with regard to gas behaviours within the systems AEMO operates, and she regularly relies on the technical knowledge she acquired during her degree to understand how assets such as compressors operate in the gas system.
Tim works in AEMO’s Gas Real Time Operations, where he uses knowledge from his mechanical engineering degree every day. He has found, for example, that his knowledge about compressors and flow characteristics helps him understand operational strategies and limitations in delivering gas to the markets AEMO operates.
Ranga joined AEMO’s 2014 Graduate intake with a Bachelor of Commerce. He’s now part of the Supply Forecasting team, which oversees the publication of several planning documents that inform investment decisions in Australia’s energy markets.
Ranga’s studies in economics and finance are put to use daily as he undertakes critical market and statistical analysis. His previous rotations in Market Performance and Prudentials also required him to utilise his knowledge in microeconomic theory and financial derivatives.
As independent market operator, AEMO values the skills of commerce, economics, and econometrics graduates who can perform detailed analysis and report on issues, market trends, participant drivers, consumer behaviour, and market resilience.
“One of the great things about AEMO’s graduate program is rotating through a variety of roles, gaining exposure to different areas within this diverse company,” says Ranga.
“I love being able to achieve results as part of a team, and I’m definitely expanding my skill set. If you demonstrate that you are willing to learn there is just so much support here to help you do that,” he added.
In particular, Ranga says he’s been challenged to develop his time management skills to better manage workflows and improve his communication.
Other opportunities to date have included a site visit to NovaPower’s gas turbines and training in a variety of software packages.
“I couldn’t recommend AEMO more highly,” said Ranga. “The teams I have been a part of have been extremely welcoming and are always willing to help me and share their knowledge and expertise.”
Sean studied business information systems (and business), majoring in human resources and was accepted into AEMO as an Information Technology Graduate. His first task at AEMO was to assist with implementing new technology to improve business processes and reduce administrative work.
A natural evolution of this work was to join the People & Culture team. Within the team, Sean was involved in human resources reporting and analytics, and completed work on the 2015 Graduate Recruitment Campaign.
For his next rotation, Sean moved into the Information Systems Infrastructure team to gain a solid understanding of how AEMO’s IT services facilitate the business.
“I’ve been given an enormous opportunity and have been encouraged to take on new challenges within my Graduate role. I’m constantly being given opportunities to develop—ones that I doubt I would be offered anywhere else,” said Sean.
“AEMO rewards people who are enthusiastic and motivated to achieve their goals, and are ready to take charge of their own careers. I have been given all the necessary tools to learn, develop, and grow both technically and personally.”
Sean says AEMO challenges him to step out of his comfort zone with tasks that challenge his thinking. He’s learnt to be direct and goal-oriented in his communication approach in order to communicate effectively with senior managers.
“AEMO prides itself on its people, and has empowered me to take control of my own learning and development. Through continual feedback and support, I know I’m in a great position to establish a very successful career and have the opportunity to learn, grow, and make a difference.”
